PANACEA
(2009 Annual Piece)
Unearthed from the pale rock of the coastal cliffs in the form of a mighty
fossil egg. The treasure of Cael?men was carried to the Temple of Artefacts
where the master engraver dwelt; the people knew that she would want to see it
first. Caelum told the people that she believed the egg to be a relic of
prehistoric times when the lands were ruled by giants. That night she dreamt she
saw the egg carved with strange interweaving symbols, and with the first light
of morning picked up her chisel and began work. Caelum worked tirelessly for
many days stopping for neither sleep nor food, the designs flowing from her
chisel as though unseen hands guided it.
At last the great opus was finished
and the engraver staggered back exhausted to overlook her work, but her legs
were now too weak to support her, and with a stumble she fell forward against
the egg. No sooner had her palms pressed against the cool skin of the fossil
than the crippling ache that burned in every muscle suddenly ceased. Her body
was instantly filled with a light ecstasy that melted away the hunger and the
fatigue leaving her refreshed and at peace.
It soon became known across the
lands that the sacred egg of Cael?men was a panacea of the gods; one touch of
the engraved fossil and every ill would be cured. So adept had been the hands of
the engraver in interpreting the symbols and conceits of her dream, that perhaps
a little of the divine power that had driven her was also worked into the piece.
The Gods themselves must have thought so, for they sent a beautiful she-dragon,
so it was believed, to abide in the temple to watch over the precious artefact.
The dragon Venustus would suffer only those pilgrims in genuine need to lay
hands on the engraved stone and find the relief they craved.
